What is the difference between EDM and wire EDM?

There are some differences between regular EDM and wire EDM. Different processing technologies are applied to different industrial manufacturing needs.

EDM

EDM machines can be divided into traditional conventional EDM machines and wire-cut EDM machines. Traditional EDMs use a tool to transmit an electrical current from the tool's cathode to the anode along with a metal plate, where the current reacts to melt or vaporize the metal. Because of dielectric fluid, virtually no material debris is generated and washed away from the workpiece.

Wire-cut EDM

The WCEDM pulls the thin wire, which then releases the charged current that acts as a cathode and guides it along the desired cutting path or slit. The dielectric fluid immerses the wire and workpiece in water, filtering and guiding sparks. Thin wires allow for more precise cuts, and slitting technology can be up to 3" comprehensive and precisely positioned to +/-0.0002". The high precision of wire EDM allows the fabrication of complex 3D cutting processes and high precision dies.

Wire-cut EDM machines are operated by CNC-controlled instruments, which can control the wire on a three-dimensional axis with greater flexibility. Traditional EDM cannot produce narrower angles or more complex patterns, while it can perform wire EDM. A more precise cutting process allows for more intricate cuts. Wire EDMs are capable of cutting metal as thick as 0.004 inches. The EDM wire only evaporates the metal at a specific thickness, thereby eliminating potential debris, except for all sides of the WCEDM on the wire. There will be sparks, which means the slit must be thicker than the wire itself. On the other hand, since the current loop surrounds the wire, it increases the diameter of the most minor and most precise cutting paths.

Wire-cut EDM is a metalworking technology, an unconventional process that acts on components that are resistant to conventional machining processes; thousands of sparks are discharged onto the metal workpiece for cutting, but the necessary conditions are These parts must be electrically conductive and are usually metallic materials such as steel, titanium, alloys, and brass. Instead of cutting the material, the EDM process melts or vaporizes it, resulting in precise lines and less debris without taking up too much workspace. EDM's precision technology is used in various industries to cut a variety of hard metals.

Wire EDM Applications

With the technology and function of EDM, many industrial manufacturing applications are used in its precision production process. EDM technology can cut small objects, so it is usually applied to small and high-precision complex projects, cost-effective for small production. However, in EDM production, the wire has to be constantly moved and cannot be reused, so the copper or other metal wire can be several kilometers long, which increases the cost. The production process of EDM does not need to be used to avoid burrs. It can use for fragile items but relatively pay attention to thermal stress.
