What is EDM?


EDM stands for Electrical Discharge Machining.


Simply put, EDM is the reverse of welding. The EDM process uses electricity to remove material from a conductive metal workpiece. The electrode uses an electric spark, without ever touching the part, to remove material in the shape required. There are three forms of EDM: Wire EDM, Sinker EDM, and Small Hole EDM Drilling.

What is EDM machining?

· Tombstones: A modular, cube-shaped fixture mounted on a rotary table. It allows multiple parts to be set up on different faces, enabling the machining of several sides in a single setup. This is highly efficient for production work.

· Modular Fixturing Systems: These consist of a library of standardized components (base plates, angle plates, clamps, locators) that can be quickly assembled and disassembled to create custom fixtures for a wide variety of part geometries.

· Magnetic Chucks: Used for holding ferromagnetic materials. They provide a flat, unobstructed holding surface, ideal for thin plates in Wire-EDM applications.

· Custom-Built Fixtures: For complex or high-volume production, fixtures are custom-designed and manufactured for a specific component. These offer the highest level of optimization for part geometry, clamping, and flushing.

· 3R System / Universal Tooling: A popular modular system that uses a highly precise coupling mechanism between the machine table and the fixture. It allows for rapid and ultra-precise (< 5µm repeatability) changeover of pallets, electrodes, and workpieces.
