Fixture Repeat Positioning Accuracy: What It Is & Why It Matters
Repeat positioning accuracy is one of the most critical specifications for precision workholding fixtures, EROWA / 3R compatible chucks and EDM electrode holders. It describes how consistently a workpiece or electrode can return to the exact same position after being removed from the fixture and re-clamped again.
Definition
Repeat positioning accuracy refers to the deviation of the measured position when the same part is repeatedly loaded, unloaded and repositioned on the fixture under identical clamping conditions.
Important note: It is different from positioning accuracy.
Positioning accuracy: How close the final position is to the theoretical target position.
Repeat positioning accuracy: How consistent the positions are across multiple re-clamping cycles.
A fixture can have good repeatability even if its absolute positioning offset exists. For most EDM and CNC machining, repeatability is often more important.
Why repeat positioning accuracy matters for your machining
1. Consistent part quality
When you re-clamp electrodes or workpieces for multi-step machining, high repeatability ensures every finished part stays within tolerance. No re-alignment work is needed between operations.
2. Save setup time
EROWA / 3R quick-change fixture systems are designed for fast swapping. Good repeat accuracy means operators can remove and reload parts in minutes without re-indicating.
3. Reduce scrap rate
Poor repeatability causes dimension fluctuation between batches, leading to rejected workpieces, especially for mold and precision die components.
How we test repeat positioning accuracy
We perform repeated loading & unloading tests with precision gauge tools (dial indicator, displacement sensor or CMM):
1. Clamp the standard reference pin on the fixture.
2. Record the reading.
3. Unload the reference pin completely, then re-clamp it.
4. Repeat this cycle for 10~20 times.
5. Calculate the maximum deviation of all measured results as the repeat positioning accuracy.
Typical specification for our EROWA / 3R compatible fixtures
Our standard locating chucks and electrode holders achieve repeat positioning accuracy 0.002 mm (2 μm).
This performance meets the requirement for die sinking EDM, mold machining and high-precision CNC applications.
Key factors affecting fixture repeatability
- Flatness and surface finish of the locating interface
- Clamping force stability
- Guide / locating pin fit clearance
- Material hardness and wear resistance
- Cleanliness of contact surface (chip and dust will damage repeat precision)
Summary
For mold makers and precision machining shops, repeat positioning accuracy directly determines production stability. Our quick-change fixture system delivers stable micron-level repeatability, helping you shorten setup time and maintain consistent machining quality in mass production.
